PERSONALITY:
Violet McGonagall is a sweet girl with a positive outlook on life. Or, at least, that's what she's trying to be. She tries to see the best in people, to gloss over their mistakes, to give them the benefit of the doubt. If someone's particularly rude, she'll try and remind herself that they've probably just had a bad day. Perhaps they woke up on the wrong side of the bed or had a personal catastrophe that she doesn't know about. To have a positive outlook on life and prevent letting the negative energy get her down is A Goal. For the most part, this works out well for her. She tends to get along well with others, doesn't take things to heart too often, and carefully avoids making enemies. However, pushing your feelings aside day in and day out to become what you'd like to be -- it's a little rough. Sometimes, her emotions come crashing down on her and she'll react poorly to a small, insignificant thing that normally wouldn't phase her.
Frankly, before she started at Gooseberry, Violet McGonagall would not have met any of those "personality goals". She was quiet, she was shy, and she tended to spend more time with her nose in a book than talking to her classmates. It was difficult to make friends in Ravenclaw, a lot of the students were similarly taken with their studies and unable to make the time for a girl that could barely convince herself to make the effort to talk to them. So -- to say that the personality she's adopted at Gooseberry takes a toll on her at times is not an exaggeration. She's learned how to behave in a way that attracts friendship, but has a harder time being honest with people and getting to know them properly. Her personality is a little too sculpted for her to know how to let people in.
The times in which Violet is most herself? With a book in her hands, of course. If she couldn't read about history, or fall into a fictional world, her stress levels would be through the roof. She's more comfortable in a universe she'd never be able to visit than in the one she's inhabiting. It's easiest for her to open up to others when she's discussing either history or the books she's read. Where passion comes in, unease disappears. Not that she often appears uneasy, it's more that her actions are very calculated to be who she'd like to be as often as she can manage it.
One of her biggest downfalls is -- despite her very best efforts -- she can gossip like nobody's business. She doesn't mean to do it, but part of not wanting to talk about herself leads her to be a little too willing to talk about somebody else. She tends to start off with something along the lines of "oh, no, I couldn't possibly tell you, it's a secret" and it's ends with her spilling every single detail she's learned, down to the very last facial expression or phrase she's remembered hearing. She doesn't want to gossip about you. She doesn't want to be untrustworthy. She doesn't even mean it in a "talking shit" sort of way. She just… can't help herself. All those years of people watching, and guessing at what people were doing or motivated by, has led to her being a little all too willing to talk about them. And, all right, sometimes, to very select people, she can also let out the occasional extremely negative rant about people. Even if she's usually on very good terms with them.
Honestly, Violet is trying to be a better person. She's trying to become someone that everyone likes (despite the fact that it's impossible to do) and to become someone that is capable of doing anything they put their mind to. Her family has high expectations of her, but their expectations are nothing compared to the ones she puts on herself. The girl has Goals with a capital G -- in fact, they're all listed in a notebook hidden away somewhere -- and she won't rest until she's achieved them. A bit of a perfectionist, she can't stand making the same mistake twice. For Violet McGonagall, it's unacceptable to let history repeat itself. Which makes it all the more frustrating for her when she inevitably does make the same mistake twice. She's only human, after all.
SKILLS
LANGUAGES SPOKEN: English. She knows Gaelic curse words and she's learned some Spanish ones since transferring, but otherwise, she's just an English speaker.
PATRONUS: None.
SKILLS: She's not athletic nor artistic, but she does have a memory for history that rivals most. She wouldn't call it a skill, per se, but a passion. Oh -- and she did ballet as a child, perhaps that counts. She's not entirely rubbish at it these days.
HISTORY
FAMILY MEMBERS:
Benjamin McGonagall, father. Obliviator.
Ellis McGonagall, mother. Healer.
Albert McGonagall, brother. Crayon chewer.
Minerva McGonagall, great aunt. Professor.
HISTORY:
Violet McGonagall was born into a family of overachievers. You couldn't just be someone, you needed to be Someone Special. McGonagalls were not slackers, they did not give up, and they certainly didn't waste their time. Which is not to say they were unloving -- they were very loving. She never felt unaccepted, she simply felt that she might have been a disappointment at times. As a child, she mistakenly identified the color pink as violet -- "her" color. Despite a couple of attempts made to correct her, she continued to believe this until she learned her colors properly. It's all rather embarrassing to her now -- worse yet, her family occasionally teases her by calling her Pink -- but at the time it was simply a cute, silly thing that child had done.
The expectations put on Violet were simply -- do well. Perform your best. Deliver your optimum performance. While they simply meant "do your best", she took it to heart that she needed to be the best. As a child, she wanted to run the fastest (she couldn't) or climb the tallest tree (she often had the most bruised knees, if that counts for something). In school, she wanted to be the example of Great Work, which turned out to be where she excelled. Unfortunately, the desire to be the best took a toll on her social life. She spent too much time studying, learning, reading, taking in everything that she could, and in turn, she didn't take the time to make friends. Light competition, as it turned out, didn't a best friend make.
By the time she started Hogwarts, Violet was incredibly smart and well educated, but useless when it came to interacting with her peers. She was shy, awkward, quiet. More comfortable with her nose in a book than making conversation. In large part, it's why she desired the exchange student program. She couldn't turn over a new leaf at Hogwarts -- everyone knew her there. They knew who she was, they knew what nicknames turned her face redder than a tomato, and they'd have known she was faking it. Her exceptional marks got her in, but her brand spanking new personality is what made her stay. It was a fake it til you make it moment -- and, honestly, it was a lot easier to fake it when she knew it would be a temporary stay at the school. By the time she was deciding to continue her education as Gooseberry, she was comfortable in her new personality.
SCHOOL
YEAR: Sophomore (Grade 10).
HOUSE: Azurcrest. Formerly, Ravenclaw.
SORTING: It was an easy sorting at Hogwarts. The sorting hat looked inside of her and saw her desire for knowledge, a desire that overwhelmed compared to anything else. By the time she came to Gooseberry, a different desire had taken over. She wanted to have fun, to make friends, to be what she never could be. Frankly, there was only one choice to be made, only one choice that she wanted. Azurcrest would be her home in Gooseberry.
WAND: 10", hawthorn, dragon heartstring.
FAMILIAR: Violet's familiar is a completely white cat -- minus a few stray black hairs on the very top of her head -- named Mew. Lacking affection towards the rest of the world, Mew is a lap cat when it comes to Violet herself. And -- okay, she's grown to like a couple of other people to a degree. If Violet's not available for pets.
CLASSES: Charms, Hermeticism, History of Magic, Potions, Transfigurations, Artificing, DADA, Wizard Literature.
ADVANCED STUDY: N/A at the moment.
SENIOR PROJECT: Undecided, but definitely related to history somehow.
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE: She does well and studies hard. Her favorite class is without a doubt History of Magic, whereas her least favorite class is Transfiguration. History of Magic is a place where she can study what she's always loved -- history -- and also an added reason why she decided to stay at Gooseberry. Here, the History of Magic teacher is much more enthusiastic, and fun to learn from. Hogwarts, she simply ignored the classes themselves and did more independent study. Transfiguration is her least favorite class because it's the one she has the least amount of aptitude for. It requires putting forth a significant amount of effort and time for a class she doesn't even enjoy very much.
